Who We Are

Clide Cannon, owner of Cannon’s Auctions, is a 3rd generation Auctioneer with a heritage steeped in antiquity.

In 1942, Dorothy Cannon stood proudly behind the iconic podium with gavel in hand. She slammed the gavel down onto the lectern marking the beginning of a family way of life. Much like the auctions of present, Dorothy sold real estate, furniture, antiques, horses and livestock.

In the beginning she was a contractually committed auctioneer with Smalridge’s Auctions in South Africa.  Shortly after World War II her husband “Gun” Cannon joined the auction house.  Dorothy went on to become a member of the Institute of Estate Agents and Auctioneers of South Africa, a sworn Government Appraiser and in 1946 was made an associate of the Auctioneers of Land and Property Agents Association of London England. In 1952 Dorothy co-founded Cannon & Finlay Auctions with her husband “Gun” Cannon.

Pat Cannon followed the path set forth by his mother and father when he joined Cannon & Finlay in 1961.  He took the Cannon name to the forefront of premier auctioneering in KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg and the surrounding districts in South Africa.

Pat Cannon, now retired, was a renowned Valuer, Government appointed Appraiser, and highly accomplished Auctioneer.  During his career he earned the title of Colonel from the Missouri Auction School in Kansas, was an Appointed Appraiser by the Minister of Justice, Licensed Auctioneer and Estate Agent, Registered Associate Valuer, Member of the South African Council of Valuers, and previously appointed Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of Oaths.

Inspired by the tradition of his family, Clide Cannon, Pat’s son cofounded the South African auction company Cannon & Cannon in 1990. Almost 10 years later he moved to America in an effort to further expand his experience as a professional auctioneer.  For 3 years Clide served as Galley Director at Motley’s Auctions, located in Richmond, Virginia.  In 2003 he set out independently, combining estate liquidations with a platform that has gained extensive popularity; live internet auctions.  Clide actively managed auctions of fine antiques, decorative arts, personal property liquidations and all aspects of estate sales in Richmond, Virginia and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. In 2005 he started to exclusively specialize in live internet auctions.  Clide Cannon is now the owner of Cannon’s Online Auctions; a full service internet auctioneer dedicated to improving the experience of buyers and sellers through auctions.
